Carlisle United caused the shock of the season so far as the League One outfit knocked out nine-time winners of The FA Youth Cup and last season's finalists, Manchester United.

An early penalty for the visitors and a brilliant second strike put the Cumbrians 2-0 ahead after half an hour, and it proved too big a task for United to overcome.

Danny Welbeck pulled a goal back just before the interval, but despite a second half spent almost permanently in Carlisle’s half the Reds couldn’t make the pressure count.

The visitors took the lead after just 12 minutes when United goalkeeper Ben Amos brought down Carlisle striker Gary Madine inside the area. Madine stepped up and duly fired home from 12 yards to surprise Paul McGuinness's team.

The Red Devils have a proven pedigree of producing good young players, and it showed as they began to take a grip on proceedings, but the turning point in the tie came shortly after the half-hour mark. Reds skipper Corry Evans struck the post with a left-footed strike after a period of pressure, only to see his side go further behind moments later.

When it seemed that the home side would soon be level, Carlisle struck again through Steve Hindmarch who hit a terrific volley from 25 yards out that Amos had no chance of stopping.

Manchester United's young forward Daniel Welbeck, who has been spoken about in glowing terms by Sir Alex Ferguson, produced a moment of magic to put United right back in contention.

The England youth international turned in the penalty area to evade the defenders before drilling the ball with his left foot into the bottom corner. Coming minutes before the interval it was exactly what was required to set up a thrilling second period.

Despite waves of pressure from McGuinness's side, Carlisle would not be denied a famous win as they held out the entire second half to produce one of the upsets of the season. Carlisle will now host the winners of tonight's tie between Southend United and Stoke City.

Elsewhere, Bristol City also won themselves a trip to the Fifth Round by beating Leeds 2-1. Striker Robert Stambolziev scored both goals including a dramatic stoppage time winner after an intense display of football, at Ashton Gate. Sam Jerome was the goalscorer for Leeds.

Macclesfield Town went to Sunderland for their first appearance in the Fourth Round but went home 2-1 losers. Sunderland went ahead with an early penalty from Martyn Waghorn and increased their lead through Nathan Luscombe in the 23rd minute. Macclesfield gained a well-deserved consolation 11 minutes from time though Kristian Dennis but unfortunately, for them, it was not enough.

Sunderland will now play either Arsenal or Liverpool in the next round. Tottenham's trip to Port Vale and Swindon Town's tie with Middlesbrough were both postponed due to bad weather.
