Second Round Proper

Swindon Town booked their place in the Third Round of The FA Youth Cup with a hard-fought win over non-league neighbours Salisbury City.

Under the watchful gaze of the club's senior management trio Paul Sturrock, Kevin Summerfield and John Blackley, two goals from Chris Allen were enough in the end to see off plucky Salisbury and secure a 2-1 win after extra time.

But Newton revealed it took some harsh words during the half-time break to inspire his side to victory and set up a Third Round home tie against QPR.

Newton said: "I was pleased with our second half performance but unfortunately it needed strong words at the break to shake them into action.

"We always knew that Salisbury away would be a tough fixture and there were no surprises.

"However, I think some of the lads expected it to happen for them without the application required.

"It was good to see Chris Allen put in a dominant performance in the middle after missing the Swansea game.

"QPR should be a better game for us and hopefully we can get a crowd in at The County Ground to support the lads in what is another important game for the club, with a place in Round Four at stake."

Meanwhile, in Thursday night's other tie, Cambridge United beat Tranmere 2-0 to earn a Third Round tie at home to Crewe Alexandra.

The home side were out of the blocks quickly with a fourth minute goal by Michael Hyem. Robbie Willmott sealed the win with a well-taken penalty eight minutes into the second half.
