West Ham celebrate winning The FA Youth Cup in 1999, having demolished Coventry.
The class of '99
By David Barber.
One of the most impressive youth sides in recent years was West Ham United's in the 1998-99 season.
The team of Joe Cole and Michael Carrick crushed Coventry City 9-0 on aggregate to lift The FA Youth Cup and there were amazing scenes at the second leg at Upton Park.
Hammers hadn't won The Cup for 18 years but now they were unstoppable. They breezed past Stockport County, Walsall, York City, Arsenal and Everton and racked up 20 goals in the process.
In the first leg of the Final at Highfield Road three goals in eight minutes in the second half gave them a 3-0 win.
No-one could have anticipated just how popular the return leg in London's East End would be. Upton Park was swamped by thousands of Hammers fans, something practically unheard of for a youth match.
It was an evening of great excitement, with the Sky cameras there too.
With the ground more or less full, West Ham tore into the opposition from the start and Bertie Brayley (pictured below) put them ahead inside three minutes. Coventry had no answer to the whirlwind that was Cole and it proved to be a difficult 90 minutes for the Sky Blues' promising young 'keeper, Chris Kirkland.
As the young Hammers ran riot, there were further goals from Adam Newton (28 minutes), Richard Garcia (a penalty on 34), Brayley (59), Carrick (64) and Garcia (70).
The massive Upton Park crowd, mostly families with kids, went crazy at the end as their team collected The Cup.
