FA Youth Cup Fourth Round
Tuesday 17 January
Wolverhampton 1-2 Charlton
Brighton & Hove 2-1 Chelsea
Carlisle 2-1 Huddersfield
Southampton 1-0 Aston Villa
Sheffield United 5-0 Wigan
Last night's five ties in The FA Youth Cup Fourth Round Proper saw three Premiership clubs go out - Aston Villa, Chelsea and Wigan Athletic.
The top clash at St Mary's brought together two of the favourites to lift the trophy. Southampton, finalists last season, took on Aston Villa, runners-up in 2004 and winners two years earlier against Wayne Rooney's Everton. It was bound to be close and Aristoles Di Carvalho's 66th-minute effort proved to be decisive.
Southampton coach Georges Prost was a happy man at the final whistle.
"It was a tough game," he told the club's official website. "But the most important thing is for us to continue the race - and we are still in it."
A crowd of 1,168, which included Theo Walcott, saw Saints create the first real opening midway through the first half. David McGoldrick, a regular scorer for the Reserves, pushed the ball through for Di Carvalho to run behind the defence. But he delayed his shot for Villa's Lund to slid in and clear for a corner.
Villa were starting to get on top when the home side finally grabbed the lead. Adam Lallann burst through for a shot that the advancing 'keeper blocked and Di Carvalho pounced onto the loose ball to slot home from about eight yards.
A Lloyd James free-kick smacked against a post for Saints ten minutes from time as they secured a Fifth Round tie at Bolton.
Di Carvalho, known as 'Toti', was pleased to score the winning goal.
"It was a tight game and a big challenge for us - and I was very happy to get the goal," he said.
There were almost 3,000 fans at Withdean to witness Brighton & Hove Albion's 2-1 win against Chelsea, with Joe Gatting and Dan Leach scoring Albion's goals.
Chelsea's recent record in the competition will disappoint them - in the last three seasons they have lost 2-1 at Colchester in the Third Round, 2-0 at home to Villa in the Third Round and 2-1 at Port Vale in the Fourth Round.
Albion coach Dean Wilkins claimed to be "chuffed to bits" at their victory.
Manchester United, the 2003 winners, are amongst the sides in FA Youth Cup action tonight. They play Sunderland at Durham City's ground. Two previous winners in Millwall and Watford meet at The Den.
