The FA Youth Cup Fourth Round
18 January 2006
Manchester United made it a winning double last night when their youth side edged Sunderland 2-1 after extra time in The FA Youth Cup's Fourth Round.
The home tie for the Black Cats was played at Durham City's ground and as expected it went to the wire.
Sam Hewson put United, the 2003 winners, into the lead on 15 minutes with a penalty after Frazier Campbell had been brought down in the box.
It looked to be enough to take them through to the Fifth Round until Sunderland struck back with Craig McFarlane's equaliser in the last ten minutes.
Febian Brandy, a 52nd-minute substitute, scored the clincher for United eight minutes from the end of the extra half-hour. Moments after having one "goal" chalked off for offside, The England U17 international took his chance after Sean Evans had put the ball in from the right.
Now United have a home tie with Charlton Athletic to look forward to. A second-half brace from Jamie Clarke saw Blackburn Rovers, FA Youth Cup runners-up in 1998 and 2001, through to the last 16 at Derby County's expense.
Clarke had also netted in the previous round against Tottenham. Nottingham Forest won a thriller with Reading that finished 2-2 at the end of extra-time and then went to a penalty shootout edged 5-4 by Forest.
Captained by German winger Felix Bastians, Forest had gone 2-0 up through Sam Mullarkey and Brendan Maloney before the Royals hit back. Tonight's sole Fourth Round tie is a big one, holders Ipswich Town facing a difficult test at Anfield.
Steve Heighway and John Owens are in charge of a Liverpool team that will be trying to emulate the 1996 side that included Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher and went all the way to lift The Cup.
One to watch: Febian Brandy
The young striker made an immediate impact when he came off the bench having one disallowed before coring the winning goal.
Having been called up for England Under-16s and Under-17s last year, Brandy will be looking to follow in the footsteps of fellow United Academy graduates that have made it to the top.
With excellent pace and unerring accuracy in his shot, he has the potential to be a star for both club and country in the years to come.
