Only Ipswich's match at home to Sunderland went ahead last night.
Youth Cup frozen out
Thursday, 29 January 2004.
Four of last night’s FA Youth Cup 4th Round ties fell victim to the freezing conditions.
Wolves will now play Rotherham on 2nd February and dates will be announced shortly for Swindon Town v Cardiff, Blackburn v West Bromwich and Cirencester v Crewe.
A heated protective cover on Ipswich’s Portman Road pitch allowed their tie with Sunderland to go ahead. Four days after Sunderland’s senior team had won 2-1 at Ipswich in The FA Cup, their youth side achieved an identical winning scoreline on the same ground.
A shivering crowd of 790 saw Grant Leadbitter, a regular for England Youth, put the visitors ahead with a spectacular overhead kick on 23 minutes. Ipswich equalised in controversial circumstances on 35 minutes when the referee ruled that Lewis Dodds’ clearance had been made from behind the goal-line.
What proved to be the decisive goal was headed in by Ryan Bell from Leadbitter’s free-kick two minutes before the break. Sunderland will be at home in Round 5 to the winners of the rearranged Cirencester v Crewe tie.
This season’s FA Youth Cup has already seen the demise of the youth teams of Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham amongst others. Manchester United, the holders, and Aston Villa have looked very impressive so far.
