Torquay United will take a two goal advantage into the second leg of The FA Trophy semi-final against York.
With the prize of a Wembley final at stake for both sides it was understandable that they were nervous in the first leg at Plainmoor.
It was the home side who took an early lead through Tim Stills who shot from close range after just five minutes.
The visitors tried to get into the game and created more chances but failed to trouble Martin Rice in the Torquay goal.
Torquay doubled their advantage a minute after the re-start when Lee Phillips bundled the ball home after good work on the right hand side to give the hosts a commanding lead.
Onome Sodje went closest for York as they tried to claw back a goal to take back with them for the second leg, but his shot hit the crossbar ten minutes from time.
The result puts Torquay in the driving seat for a place in The Final going into the second leg at the Kit Kat Crescent on Saturday, March 15.
