It required two Stevenage Borough goals in extra-time to squeeze past holders Grays Athletic and book their place in The FA Carlsberg Trophy Final.
Grays trailed 1-0 from last week’s first leg but levelled the tie early in the second half when midfielder Alex Rhodes, on loan from Brentford, was on target.
An extra 30 minutes was therefore needed to decide a finalist - and it was there that Stevenage’s class showed; Luke Oliver scoring on 97 minutes to make it 2-1 overall.
England National Game XI striker Steve Morison added a last-minute goal to rubber-stamp Stevenage’s place in The Final and now provides boss Mark Stimson with the chance to lift The Trophy for the third time in three years – the other two during his time with rivals Grays.
Stimson beamed: “I am delighted to make it to The Final. It’s a bit of a shame that this tie was not The Final because I think that it would have made a great showpiece.
“We didn’t play that well and we owe a great debt to our ‘keeper Alan Julian because he made some important saves to keep us in the tie.
“We have been on a great run recently, only losing once in our last ten games, so if we can continue that,we will finish the season strongly - hopefully with some silverware.”
Despite it being a chance for Stimson to win his third successive Trophy, he claims it will be his team and not himself in the spotlight.
He added: “The Final is not about me, it is about the players. I just tell them what to do, but they are the ones who go out and do it on the pitch.
“I am not concentrating on winning it for the third time in a row. I just want to win it for the club. It will be a great Final against Kidderminster and I am sure both sets of players and fans are looking forward to it.”
Stevenage will now meet Kidderminster Harriers in The Final on Saturday 12 May 2007.
