While it may seem that the season has only just finished, there is no let up for football enthusiasts and clubs are now being asked to send their entries for The FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup.

Coundon Conservative lifted the Sunday Cup as they brushed aside Lebeq Tavern Courage 5-0 at Anfield, with the players of both sides able to take part in a thrilling final at one of the best known venues in English football.

You too can now take your part in the competition which began in the 1964-65 season, was only open to County Associations. 16 of them entered, of which 15 chose a representative side.

The exception was London, who selected Summerstown FC from South-West London. Cumberland’s home ties with West Riding and Liverpool attracted gates of more than a thousand but one match in the Midlands was watched by only seven people.

Some of the names of the clubs in the Sunday Cup often raise a smile. Over the years we have seen Bird in Hand, Boars Head Trotters, Esh Winning, Pineapple, Fareham Town Centipedes, Harris Brush, Jumbo’s XI, Krakatoa, Newbiggin Dolphin, Pelican, Torpedo, Up ‘N’ Under and Wrestlers.

In May, Coundon became Sunday Cup champions at the first attempt after being encouraged to enter by Durham rivals and last year’s winners Hetton Lyons CC, who they beat in the Second Round. Their emphatic victory over the Bristol & District Sunday League outfit capped an unbelievable season for the club.
