The FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup is set to enter its 43rd year, and for the fifth consecutive season, the 45,000 capacity home of Liverpool Football Club will host the final on 29 April 2007.
Clubs now have just three weeks to submit their entries for the 2006/07 competition before the 1 August deadline, with an all-time record prize of £2,000 on offer for the winners.
The competition enables players from Sunday League teams who are not under written contract to pit their abilities against sides from across the country, and this season The FA will be providing £45,000 to help clubs meet match and travel expenses.
Last season, 132 clubs entered the competition; Hetton Lyons defeating St Joseph’s of Luton 5-3 in a thrilling final. Midfielder Stuart Brightwell was the hero for the North-East side, bagging a 25 minute hat-trick either side of half-time.
David Leitch, club secretary of the Durham and District Sunday League side who were also the first to score five goals in The Final, is hopeful that the club will retain the trophy they won with such style last April in front of chief guest, Ian Rush.
"At the age of 37 my playing days had just come to an end, but to be at Anfield, and walk out through that famous tunnel before the game was a dream come true.
"To then see our players lift the trophy after an eight-goal final played between two sides who did Sunday League football proud was something I’ll never forget, as well as seeing the pride amongst friends and family who never envisaged being part of such a special occasion."
Many former Football League players have taken part in the Sunday Cup. Kerry Dixon, the former Chelsea striker who was capped eight times by England in the 1980s, played for St Joseph's in the 1998 and 1999 Finals.
Steve Clark, The FA’s Head of Competitions has seen the competition grow in his 36 years at the organisation and is keen for more clubs to take up the challenge.
"The Sunday Cup is unique in that it offers players from Sunday Leagues the opportunity to play in a national knock-out competition, with a final at one of the most famous football grounds in the world.
"This season we have increased the prize fund and relaxed the entry criteria slightly to encourage more clubs to take part, whilst media interest in the competition is increasing all the time.
"For a team entry fee of just £40, the competition provides players with an opportunity to showcase their talents and have a once-in-a-lifetime football experience that they will never forget."
