A Kevin Gallen penalty and a Scott Sinclair header saw Plymouth Argyle book their place in The FA Cup Quarter Finals for the first time since 1984.

Derby County may be sitting atop the Championship, but today they were outplayed by Ian Holloway’s team, even before Darren Moore was sent off after 59 minutes.

It was a sign of Plymouth’s dominance that Derby goalkeeper Stephen Bywater was the away side’s best player after making a number of key saves, including a penalty stop from Gallen.

Plymouth started strongly, with Sinclair’s 25-yard strike forcing a good save from Bywater after only three minutes.

The Pilgrims took the lead after 11 minutes when Gallen was brought down by Moore when clean through in the box, but the tall defender escaped a booking.

Gallen took the penalty and squeezed his shot past Bywater, who went the right way and got a finger to the ball.

The Derby keeper later made another good save when he tipped Dan Gosling’s 18-yard shot round the post with a fingertip save.

Ian Holloway’s men were awarded another penalty on 29 minutes, when Darren Moore fouled Krisztian Timar after a Gallen corner.

This time, Gallen tried to put his shot into the other corner, but Bywater read his intentions again and successfully made the save.

Plymouth continued to dominate after the break, with Derby clearly missing the midfield presence of Matt Oakley and failing to create any clear chances.

The league leaders’ frustration boiled over after 59 minutes, when Moore was sent off after an altercation with Gallen saw him receive a second yellow card.

The result was secured after 82 minutes through 17-year-old Scott Sinclair – on loan from Chelsea - who headed home a David Norris cross to give manager Holloway his first taste of The FA Cup Quarter-Finals.
