Bloaters bank on Cup run
Monday, 23 August 2004.
Football fans young and old in Norfolk are invited to see the world’s most famous football trophy, The FA Cup as it arrives in Great Yarmouth tomorrow.
Following on from its visit to Wick FC on Thursday, The FA Cup will be coming to Wellesley Recreation Ground, home to Great Yarmouth Town FC to help kick-off this season's competition.
Four days later, Alan Smith’s ‘Bloaters’ play host to Long Melford FC in a Norfolk-Suffolk FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie. As well as local pride at stake, the winners will be £500 better off through The FA Cup Prize Fund.
If either team makes it through to the First Qualifying Round stage, the players will also become eligible for The FA Cup Player of the Round Award.
Twelve months ago, the BBC kicked off its coverage of The FA Cup at Great Yarmouth, an accolade that was remembered by two local men who both subsequently won £500 of UMBRO kit and equipment for their local sides.
Neil Bowman of Caister-on-Sea and Ian Patterson of Hemsby both entered FA Competitions in Shoot Magazine and The Times at the end of last season, where they had to nominate their ‘Team’ of the 2003/04 FA Cup.
Rather than plumping for winners Manchester United, both nominated Great Yarmouth Town FC, citing the exposure gained by the club and Paul Thompson’s opening goal as playing a part in the clubs’ survival last season, greatly assisted by the Norfolk FA and Norwich City Football Club.
Both Neil and Ian will be receiving their new kits for Burgh Castle Sports & Social Club and Acle Youth Under 15’s on the 24th August.
Great Yarmouth Town FC Manager Alan said:
“This is a great gesture by The FA, and we are hugely excited that The FA Cup will be coming to us for the second consecutive season.
“By throwing open the gates of our ground between 11-2pm on 24th August and inviting supporters young and old to come and have their photos taken with The FA Cup, we hope that fans from across the area will then come back to see our Extra Preliminary Round game against Long Melford.
“Last season our highest gate was 271 against Southall, and it would be great to beat that. Maybe The FA Cup coming to the club will also bring us some good luck and a little bit of magic in the competition as well!”
Great Yarmouth FC take on Long Melford in the Extra Preliminary Round of The FA Cup at Wellesley Recreation Ground on Saturday 28 August. Kick off is 3pm.
