For the first time this season, TheFA.com has four nominations for you to choose from; two from Sir Alex Ferguson’s United side, and two from Dennis Wise’s Lions.

For United, Wes Brown and Paul Scholes are the two nominees after their influential performances put a halt to Arsenal’s pursuit of a treble.

Brown has been blighted by injury in recent seasons and has taken his time to get his match fitness and form back to the levels that prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to hail him as ‘one of the most natural defender the club has had in years’ back in December 2000.

On Saturday at Villa Park, Brown faced the challenges of four Arsenal strikers, and came up with a vital headed goal-line clearance from Dennis Bergkamp’s early first-half strike, with Roy Carroll stranded.

In the second half, Brown and his fellow defenders ensured that Carroll was not called upon to make a save as Arsenal rang the changes, helping United to their first FA Cup Final since 1999.

The second defender to be nominated is Millwall centre-back Darren Ward. Ward joined Millwall in 2001 from Watford, semi-finalists last year, and yesterday performed a valuable role in Millwall’s victory over Sunderland that sees the South London club qualify for the first FA Cup Final in their 119-year history.

Winning every header, standing firm alongside Matt Lawrence, Ward carried out his defensive duties with the minimum of fuss. His defensive qualities could next be tested against Ruud van Nistelrooy, if the Dutchman recovers from injury in time for The Cup Final.

The other two nominees for The FA Cup Player of the Round this morning are Tim Cahill and Paul Scholes.

Despite the performances of Cristiano Ronaldo and Dennis Wise, the economical promptings of Roy Keane and the mature, disciplined performance of Darren Fletcher, this weekend’s two goalscorers have been nominated for their crucial roles in seeing their sides through to this season’s Final on 22nd May.

The FA now wants fans to decide the overall winner by casting votes in our poll, found on the homepage of TheFA.com, and for everyone taking part, there is also the chance to win two tickets for The FInal at Cardiff. Voting ends at 9.00am on Tuesday 13th April.

The final Player of the Round of the 2003-04 FA Cup will win £3000 worth of UMBRO football kit and equipment for the local school, club or organisation of his choice. He will also receive an UMBRO gift of kit player package including XAI boots and training apparel as well as an engraved salver.
