England internationals Frank Lampard and John Terry celebrate Community Shield success.
Millennium memories
By Neil Martin. Monday, 08 August 2005.
Frank Lampard admits he was happy to continue his love affair with the Millennium Stadium after helping Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the Community Shield.
It was the last time the game will be played in Cardiff, with the new Wembley set to open in time to host this season’s FA Cup Final.
The Chelsea midfielder has enjoyed playing in the Millennium Stadium lately, having also won the League Cup Final against Liverpool in February.
Lampard’s recent success has helped him put the pain of the club’s FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal in Wales in 2002 well and truly behind him and he insists the Millennium Stadium was the perfect place to stage matches while Wembley was being rebuilt.
He said: "It has been a fantastic venue. I’ve really enjoyed playing here. I have lost once and won twice so I have a good record and have liked it on every occasion.
"Wembley is the spiritual home of The FA Cup and obviously everyone would like to play there, but while it has not been possible, the Millenium Stadium has been a great choice."
Chelsea’s victory meant they finished their pre-season campaign with an unbeaten record and full of confidence for the start of their Premiership defence on Sunday when they play at Wigan.
It also came just two weeks before they play Arsenal in the league at Stamford Bridge, but Lampard is adamant the players are not getting too carried away.
He added: "It’s nice to get one trophy in the bag and it gives us a real confidence booster for the start of the season.
"I don’t know if it was a big psychological win before the league game, but it is nice for your confidence.
"We have to make sure we stay focused. I don’t think there will be too much over-confidence because the manager wouldn’t allow that. We are just keeping the eye on the ball every week."
