With the FA Community Shield between Arsenal and Chelsea just three days away, TheFA.com looks back on some of the best matches of recent years.
08 August 2004: Arsenal 3 Manchester United 1
An entertaining, but goalless first half produced good opportunities for both sides before Gilberto started the goalfest when he broke the deadlock on 50 minutes.
United hit back through Alan Smith just minutes later before a sublime goal by Jose Antonio Reyes regained Arsenal the lead. An own goal by French international Mikael Silvestre with just ten minutes to go ensured Arsenal bagged the first silverware of the season.
11 August 2003: Manchester Utd 1 Arsenal 1 (Man Utd won 4-3 on pens)
Mikael Silvestre had given United the lead in the 15th minute, however Thierry Henry equalised within five minutes with a stunning 35-yard drive. As neither side could get the upper hand the game went to penalties where Tim Howard emerged as the hero when he saved the final penalty from Robert Pires to give United the victory in dramatic fashion.
09 August 1998: Arsenal 3 Manchester United 0
Arsenal opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Nicolas Anelka back heeled the ball for Marc Overmars to drive high into the net clear of Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. As United pressed forward in search of an equaliser Christopher Wreh increased Arsenal’s lead on 56 minutes before Anelka finished things off with twenty minutes left.
11 August 1996: Manchester United 4 Newcastle United 0
Manchester United’s 'Double' winning team from the previous season sent tremors through the Premiership with this demolition of Newcastle at Wembley. Alex Ferguson’s young team were always in control with first half goals from Eric Cantona and Nicky Butt. Two goals in the last five minutes of the match from David Beckham and Roy Keane sealed the rout.
08 August 1992: Leeds United 4 Liverpool 3
Champions Leeds won this highly entertaining curtain raiser for the first ever Premiership season thanks largely to a hat-trick from Eric Cantona.
The mercurial Frenchman benefited from the fact that internationals like John Barnes, Steve McManaman, Jan Molby and Steve Nicol were all missing from the side. Goals from Ian Rush, Dean Saunders and an own goal by Gordon Strachan kept Liverpool in the tie before Tony Dorigo scored the winner late on.
