Wayne Rooney scored on his return from injury but also missed a penalty as Manchester United beat West Ham to reach the Fourth Round of The FA Cup.

England star Rooney hadn't played for United since damaging his knee during training on Christmas Day; but he made a winning return at Old Trafford in a Third Round Replay.

Rooney's goal came after nine minutes when Anderson released Javier Hernandez in behind the West Ham defence and the Mexican squared for Rooney to slide the ball home.

But it wasn't all joy for the striker as he ballooned a penalty over the bar after Jordan Spence had handled the ball late on.

Earlier, in an entertaining first half, Rooney also had a piledriver well saved, Alexander Buttner hit a post for United and Jussi Jaaskelainen saved superbly from Chris Smalling.

Nani - back after missing 15 games with a hamstring problem - also went agonisingly close for the hosts but was denied by a fine clearance off the line from young West Ham star Dan Potts.

Matt Taylor had two decent chances for West Ham after the break as the Hammers put everything into trying to get back in the game. But captain Ryan Giggs was running the show for United and Hernandez came very close to doubling United's lead on the break - denied once again by the excellent Jaaskelainen.

Then came Rooney's missed penalty in the 79th minute and also a disallowed goal from Herndandez as the home team grew wasteful. But United still held on for ultimate victory.

United now face Fulham in the Fourth Round at Old Trafford.
