After watching his side ease into the Fifth Round of The FA Cup, Reading boss Brian McDermott was full of praise for the competition.

A brace from Noel Hunt and goals from Mikele Leigertwood and Gareth McCleary saw the Royals beat Sheffield United 4-0 at the Madejski Stadium.

And McDermott believes Cup progress can boost his side’s chances of Premier League survival.

He said: “I love The FA Cup and so do the players.

“Ask QPR and Norwich if they would still rather be in it and the answer would by 'yes'.

“The FA Cup has been good for me. Confidence is high, and has been for a while. I don't see The Cup as a distraction.

“A good Cup run can help in the league.”
