Dennis Bergkamp has backed Arsenal to progress in The FA Cup on Wednesday – and has high hopes for the current crop of young Guns.
Arsene Wenger’s side face Swansea City in a Third Round replay at the Emirates after being held to a 2-2 draw ten days ago.
And Arsenal legend Bergkamp believes that his former club should have enough to finish the job against the Welshmen at the second attempt
“I would think so,” he told FATV, ahead of The FA’s 150th anniversary launch.
“Looking back and playing a difficult away game and getting a result which they did, then you can take them back.
“The problem of course, is that you can think, okay so we’ve got them at home now so we’re going to beat them. But if you get through that thought, there is a big chance they can go forward.”
Currently working as assistant coach to Frank De Boer at Ajax in his homeland, the former striker still keeps a close eye on his old club.
With a crop of young, English players such as Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs in the Gunners squad, Bergkamp is encouraged to see them committing their futures to the club.
And he’s hoping that Wenger can help them to develop and achieve their ambitions with the Londoners.
“It’s fantastic for Arsenal, but it’s fantastic for English football that you can keep those players in your own country and playing in the first team,” he added.
“There was a complaint all the time when I played in England that, for all of the teams, there were too many foreigners and it kept back the young players from getting through the system to play in the first teams.
“But this is a different thing as you’ve got an English club with a lot of young English talent committing themselves to a club.
“It’s an ideal situation so it’s just a matter of getting them in the right place and you’ve got a fantastic future there.”
