John Frendo scored twice as Hitchin Town surged into The FA Cup Third Round Qualifying by beating Whitehawk 5-0 in a replay on Monday night.

The two teams drew 1-1 in the original tie but Hitchin, of the Evo Stik Southern Premier, dominated this time and opened the scoring after just six minutes through Luke Gregson.

Frendo then hit the net twice - one a penalty - before Dean Gilbert and Ieuan Lewis completed the scoring in front of a crowd of 185.

Hitchin now face Hastings United away in the next round at Pilot Field on 6 October. Hastings produced one of the results of the round when they won away at Staines Town on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Hungerford and Merthyr Town drew 1-1 in their tie on Monday night, with Merthyr winning 5-4 on penalties in the end.

Bradley Gray gave the home side the lead but Merthyr equalised through Marcus Griffiths.

In a tight encounter, the match finished level but Merthyr scored all five of their spot-kicks while Tom Fila saw his effort saved in the shoot-out by goalkeeping hero Giles Cutlan. Merthyr now travel to AFC Totton in the next round.
