Blyth Spartans' bid to reach the First Round of The FA Cup for an incredible 33rd time ended in heartbreak on Monday night.

Defender Kyle May was the unlikely hero for Workington as they ran out 1-0 winners in a tight replay at Borough Park.

The Conference North side will now face Barwell on Saturday in Third Round Qualifying.

Spartans, who have also reached the Fourth and Fifth Round of the world's greatest knockout competition in their illustrious history, started positively but their rhythm was halted following injuries to two key players in the first half.

First, manager Tommy Cassidy had to bring on Callum Hassan for Tom Berj and then Lee Mason had to be replaced by Jake Turnbull.

The changes disrupted the visitors and Workington made them pay on 23 minutes.

Defender May found space and his effort beat Conor Grant to give the home side the lead.

Both teams cancelled each other out in the second half, and although Andre Rodrigues Da Costa looked lively for the hosts, he could not inspire his side to build on their 1-0 advantage.

Spartans, desperately seeking to continue their love affair with The FA Cup, could not force a breakthrough in the second period, despite the best efforts of Martin Brittain and Phil Airey.
