Edgar Davids has revealed his excitement ahead of making his first appearance in The FA Cup.

The Dutch legend is set to start for Barnet on Saturday when they host Oxford in the First Round Proper.

Davids, 38, joined the League Two side last month in a player-coach role alongside new boss Mark Robson.

But despite playing for Tottenham and Crystal Palace earlier in his career, Davids has yet to feature in English football’s most famous competition.

And he admits he cannot wait to make his debut in the tournament. He said: “The FA Cup means a lot to me.

“It’s so exciting. In Holland and Italy, not many teams can win the cup but The FA Cup is something special.

“You guys make it something special, it’s got a special touch to it. It’s so contagious that it even affects people from overseas and makes them want to watch it.

“When I was younger I watched a couple of Finals – but only because it was The FA Cup.

“I never watched the Italian, Spanish or Dutch cup competitions because they were not as exciting as The FA Cup.”

Davids has won a staggering 20 trophies in a glittering career which included spells with Ajax, AC Milan, Inter, Barcelona and Juventus.

Now in the twilight of his playing days, the former Holland international midfielder is focusing on helping Barnet climb off the bottom of the League Two table.

Asked how he is adapting to the demands of being a player/coach, Davids said: “I like it – you get to play and coach and try to influence the team and players and help them develop.”

And Davids is all too aware of what the boost victory over United tomorrow in The Cup could do for Barnet’s league fortunes.

He added: “Like any other small club that does well, a run in The Cup will bring a lot of focus onto the team and you’ll get more attention from outside your local supporters.

“But you need experience to win Cup ties. The FA Cup is a whole different ball game to the league.”
