AFC Wimbledon are through to the Second Round of The FA Cup with Budweiser for the second time in their history following a remarkable First Round replay encounter at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

The hosts looked to be on their way to a 2-1 win after Charlie Strutton’s 78th-minute strike – his second of the evening – handed his side the lead for the first time but York substitute Jamie Reed netted in the 90th minute to force the tie into extra-time.

Wimbledon, who had been playing with a man extra since Scott Kerr’s dismissal in the 35th minute, took advantage of their numerical advantage with two goals in two minutes shortly after the restart to seal the win, although Clarke Carlisle provided a late scare with the seventh goal of the evening shortly before the final whistle.

York, who were comfortably beaten 3-0 at home during the League Two clash between the sides on Saturday, seemed intent on revenge and dominated the early exchanges.

The first chance of the game fell to Lanre Oyebanjo, but the York defender somehow headed over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Oyebanjo threatened again shortly afterwards, embarking on an impressive solo run before unleashing a fierce drive which was well tipped over by Dons goalkeeper Seb Brown.

And York deservedly broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute – although it came via an unlikely source, as Brown made a mess of a corner-kick and fumbled the ball into his own net.

Buoyed by their breakthrough, the visitors poured forward in search of a second and were cruelly denied another when Danny Kearns’ superb strike thumped the bar.

Wimbledon finally established a foothold in the game and were rewarded in the 34th minute as Strutton smashed the ball past York goalkeeper Michael Ingham.

And the Dons were handed a further boost within moments of Strutton’s strike as Kerr was dismissed for a professional foul.

A comparatively quiet second half passed without incident before Strutton, who had grabbed a late equaliser during the two sides’ initial meeting, reprised his hero act to put Wimbledon in front in the 78th minute.

The 23-year-old latched onto a long ball and tapped home after Ingham had parried his initial effort.

Wimbledon had chances to put the tie to bed but Christian Jolley was expertly denied by Ingham, before Strutton spurned the opportunity to clinch a hat-trick by dragging the ball wide when one-on-one with the York goalkeeper.

And the hosts were made to pay for their profligacy with just 20 seconds of normal time remaining as Reed flicked the ball past Brown with his first touch of the ball to send the tie into extra-time.

Unsurprisingly, Wimbledon began to stretch their depleted opponents and Byron Harrison gave them the lead once more within seven minutes of the restart, diverting Warren Cummings’s cross into the bottom corner.

Jack Midson tucked the ball home less than 120 seconds later to extend Dons’ lead, and despite Carlisle’s 119th-minute effort, Wimbledon held on to clinch their passage to the next phase of The FA Cup, where they will face either MK Dons or Cambridge City.
