Cheltenham broke Hereford hearts in extra-time to set up a plum home tie against Everton in the Third Round of The FA Cup with Budweiser.
The League Two club, who reached the Fifth Round in 2002, escaped thanks to Kaid Mohamed's 114th-minute strike, with penalties looming.
Toffees manager David Moyes was in attendance at Edgar Street to spy on his January opponents and he witnessed a Hereford side intent on causing another Cup shock in their illustrious history. Agonisingly for them, they just fell short.
Conference Premier side Hereford reached the Fourth Round two years ago and everyone will remember the first time they managed that - beating Newcastle en route to that stage back in 1972.
Sam Clucas had a decent chance to open the scoring in the first half for the hosts but Scott Brown denied him and on the stroke of half-time, Jermaine McGlashan was fouled by Andy Gallinagh in the box and Shaun Harrard slotted home the penalty.
Clucas, who had a fine game, then sent Edgar Street wild with a 74th-minute equaliser. As the fog descended, Clucas bundled home to set up a thrilling finale.
Extra-time was needed and Cheltenham held their nerve, with Billy Jones's cross finding Mohamed to win it.
In the night's other game, League Two Southend caused a shock as they beat League One Bury 3-2 on penalties, with goalkeeper Daniel Bentley the hero.
Bentley saved from David Worrall and Mark Hughes to hand the Shrimpers a Third Round tie against either Brentford or Bradford, subject to the Bantams' appeal against their removal from this season's competition.
Southend were indebted to Bentley for his superb stop to deny Matt Doherty from long range, while the hosts went close through Gavin Tomlin in the first half.
It took until the hour mark for the visitors to find the breakthrough, with Zac Thompson netting, but the lead lasted barely five minutes as Tomlin headed home Sean Clohessy's cross.
The Shrimpers came close to stealing it in normal time but Tomlin's effort just sailed wide and after nobody could find a way through in the extra 30 minutes, it went to penalties.
Steven Schumacher scored the first to make it 1-0 to Bury, before Freddy Eastwood netted his to level. Matt Doherty and Clohessy were successful with their kicks to make it 2-2.
Worrall then saw his kick saved by Bentley and Southend edged ahead through Kevan Hurst.
It went from bad to worse when Troy Hewitt missed his kick but Tomlin's penalty was saved by Trevor Carson to give Bury hope.
They needed Hughes to beat Bentley to stay alive but the Southend 'keeper stood firm to send his side through on a frantic night of Cup action.
Unfortunately, the two other games fell victim to the weather on Tuesday night. The tie between Notts County and Rotherham as well as Barrow and Macclesfield were both called off with frozen pitches.
