Alfreton's hopes of a famous FA Cup giant-killing came to an end as they lost 4-2 to Leyton Orient despite a brave performance.
Hopes were raised as the non-League side opened the scoring after just four minutes against their League One opponents.
Orient fought back to score three goals before half-time, but Alfreton raised hopes of a comeback when they reduced the deficit seven minutes after the interval.
But Dean Cox scored his second of the game with four minutes left to put the tie to bed and ensure Orient will travel to Hull in the Third Round.
Yet it was a brave display by Alfreton, who can be proud of their efforts.
And they started superbly, hitting the highs when Paul Clayton lashed home to send the home crowd into delirium.
Orient were stunned, but they improved as the half wore on. Cox seemed the man most likely to haul them back on level terms, and he equalised after 25 minutes, curling into the far corner to make it 1-1.
It was 2-1 just five minutes later as Dave Mooney found some space at the back post to fire home after Ben Tomlinson had inadvertently flicked on a corner.
And the visitors made it three when Mooney grabbed his second, meeting Lee Cook's cross with a bullet header.
It seemed that the tie was over, but Alfreton, who hit the woodwork three times, were not going to give up without a fight.
And they got one goal back when Tomlinson stabbed home to reduce the arrears.
But it was Orient's day, and Smith made the game safe when Cox exchanged passes with Mooney before slotting home.
