The 58th FA Youth Cup competition swung into action last night with 19 ties in the Preliminary Round. Hayes & Yeading United, who reached the First Round Proper last season, started the new campaign with an impressive 4-0 victory over their Kent visitors at Church Road.

Play in the early minutes was tentative, with no-one wanting to make a mistake, and the passing was generally unambitious and occasionally wayward. That all changed on 12 minutes when a peach of a pass by Hayes right-back Josh Christopher put striker Daniel Wishart well clear of the Welling defence.

Visiting ‘keeper Liam Barnes rushed out to make a brave block, but Wishart was alive to the possibilities, controlling the loose ball as it rolled out towards the right-hand touchline and sending a perfect left-foot chip over two defenders on the line and just under the bar.

Hayes continued to have more of the ball and Welling were finding it difficult to create anything in attack, though Leon Farell did burst into the box before slicing his shot onto the deserted terracing behind the goal. The enterprising Wishart looked likely to add to his tally, but he stood aside in the ‘D’ to allow midfielder Tomas Jansons to fire a second goal that took a slight deflection.

That was on 41 minutes and within a minute it was 3-0, right-winger Jack Todd sliding the ball in from close range after some more Wishart trickery down the left. The visitors immediately looked dispirited, one effort ending up nearer to the corner flag than the home goal.

Hayes missed a string of second-half chances, though Wishart did add a fourth on 71 minutes. The defender looked to be favourite to win a chase for the ball with the No.10, but the latter smuggled it away and thumped a left-footer inside Barnes’ near post. Welling never stopped trying to play football and might have scored twice near the end as the home side eased up.

Hayes & Yeading United will be at home to AFC Wimbledon or Kentish Town in the next round.
