Tamer Tuna scored with a hat-trick of powerful right-footers as Charlton won to set up an intriguing Third Round Proper tie with Chelsea at The Valley. When Charlton and Woking last clashed in The Youth Cup, at Kingfield Stadium in 1994, the visitors had run out 8-0 winners and a similar scoreline looked a possibility as Damian Matthew’s Young Addicks netted twice in the first eight minutes last night.
It was actually the Woking non-Leaguers who were first to impress. Ola Sogbanmu, who has played and scored for the first team in this season’s FA Cup, helped to play in Rob Carr on the left for a shot that missed the post by inches and hit an acrobatic effort himself that was also just wide. Then Tuna, who has made two substitute League appearances for the first team and been capped for Turkey at U19 level, showed his class with goals after seven and eight minutes.
Both were firm drives with the right foot that whistled past ‘keeper Matt Pegler as the Woking defence gave him far too much room. But the Valley visitors managed to steady the ship after that and make a good job of cutting off the supply lines to the lethal Tuna. There were no further goals in the first half, although Lewis Perkins and Liam Bellamy fired in shots to keep Pegler on his toes, and then Woking got right back into the match two minutes into the second period.
Sogbanmu’s persistence and impressive control allowed him to work enough space inside the box to steer the ball past Jack Binks for 2-1. But any hopes of an upset were more or less extinguished five minutes later as Tuna took Perkins’ pass in his stride to shoot clinically into the far corner. They might have added two or three more before Woking substitute Will Hammond curled a long-range left-footer against the face of the crossbar with a minute left.
