Cockfosters v Wealdstone
The FA Youth Cup sponsored by E.ON
First Qualifying Round
Chalk Lane
7.45pm, Wednesday 25 September 2008
Wealdstone, who feature in one of tonight's 37 ties in The FA Youth Cup First Round Qualifying, have enjoyed a good record in the competition in recent seasons.
The Stones take on Cockfosters at the latter's Chalk Lane ground tonight - but four years ago they were playing Liverpool at Anfield!
A series of away draws in the 2004-05 Youth Cup saw the Middlesex lads win at St Margaretsbury (2-1), Brook House (2-0), Thurrock (2-0), Billericay (2-1) and Farnborough (2-0) to earn their date at the world-famous venue. Wealdstone lost that Third Round Proper tie to Liverpool 6-0 before more than a thousand fans, but it was a night to remember for everyone connected with the team.
Stones have reached the Competition Proper in three of the last five seasons. In 2005 Folkestone Invicta edged them 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the First Round. Two years earlier they went out 3-1 at Cambridge United in the Second Round.
The Cockfosters clash kicks off at 7.45, with the winners entertaining Thamesmead Town or Redbridge in the next round. The ground is only a few yards from Cockfosters tube station on the Piccadilly line.
