Second Round Qualifying
Wednesday 8 October 2008
Yet again there were plenty of goals in the Second Round Qualifying of The FA Youth Cup, with some scorelines looking more like rugby results.
Solihull Moors notched up the highest score of this season's competition as they hit 18 goals against a hapless Wellington. Elsewhere there were big wins for Salisbury, who fired in nine against Dorchester, and Buckingham Town who beat Windsor & Eton 6-0.
Solihull Moors had a comfortable 6-1 win in their first round game at Malvern and they continued their progress in the competition with a resounding 18-0 win against west midlands opponents Wellington FC.
Marvin Johnson and Ross Dempster scored five a piece with Alex Price picking up a hat-trick and Matthew Collins and James Braide both notching braces.
To compound the visitors' misery they also managed to score an own goal as they were on the receiving end of one of the biggest hammerings in the competition's history. Solihull's next unlucky opponents will be Boldmere St Michael's who edged past Bromsgrove Rovers 3-2 after extra-time.
Solihull's haul doesn't match Manchester United's 23-0 win against Nantwich in the first-ever FA Youth Cup competition in the 1950s. More recently, Kettering humbled Daventry United 21-0 in a First Round Qualifying tie last season.
One youth team clearly inspired by their Senior squad's FA Cup magic last year, Havant & Waterlooville, made it through to the Third Round Qualifying, where they will face Weymouth, after beating Hamworthy United 3-1.
Other notable results saw Mansfield overcome Stamford 6-2, Cambridge United beat Debenham LC 4-0 and Wrexham defeat Marine 4-2.
A number of matches couldn't be decided in the 90 minutes of normal play and were forced into extra-time.
Weymouth held off the challenge of Moneyfields, eventually winning 4-1, while one of the ties of the round took place at Eastleigh where Gosport Borough were the visitors. The home side ultimately prevailed, edging the game 5-4 after 120 minutes of gripping action.
Other scores from around the grounds included a 5-2 win for Stevenage Borough at Hoddesdon, a hard-earned 4-3 victory for Shirebrook against Lincoln United and another closely fought 4-3 home win for Wakefield over Garforth.
