There were goals aplenty during an action-packed FA Vase First Round Qualifying on Saturday. 116 games took place in all, with amateur teams up and down the country dreaming of securing a place in the Wembley showpiece Final come May.
Cambridgeshire’s Ely City were among the day’s biggest winners, hammering Suffolk’s Cornard United 7-1 at the Unwin Ground.
The Eastern Counties Premier Division put their poor start to the league season behind them in emphatic style and will now be hopeful of progressing further in the competition.
There were also six-goal victories for Buckinghamshire’s Flackwell Heath, who triumphed 6-0 over Romsey Town, and for Combined Counties Premier Division side Cove, 6-0 winners on the road at Sussex’s Newhaven.
Meanwhile, bragging rights in Essex belong to Halstead Town, who romped past neighbours Harwich & Parkeston 6-0 at Royal Oak.
Goals were also delivered by the barrel-load at Herns Way, where hosts Hatfield Town ended up on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller, losing 4-3 to Kingsbury London Tigers.
Elsewhere, there were impressive home wins for Chichester City of the Sussex County League, Eastern Counties Premier Division side Haverhill Rovers and North Yorkshire’s Stokesley, while in the north-west, Morpeth Town triumphed 4-1 away to Washington.
But life was not so sweet for Birmingham-based Cadbury Athletic. The Midland Combination Premier Division side, who are associated with the famous Bourneville chocolate factory and play in all-purple, exited the competition at the first hurdle after slumping to a 2-0 defeat against St Andrews.
Eight further First Qualifying Round games take place on Sunday, including the north-west derby between Bishop Auckland and Billingham Town at Darlington Road. Second Round Qualifying fixtures will take place on Saturday September 19.
