Canning Town play their first ever match in The FA Vase this weekend when they travel to Kent for a game with Erith Town in the First Round Qualifying.

Their inaugural appearance in the competition is an historic occasion for the east Londoners, but the magic of The Vase has done little to inspire optimism at the Terence McMillan Stadium.

"We've not got a great deal of hope," said club secretary Terry Cordrey. "We are still a step seven side and I think we are pretty realistic going into a game against a side that play at a higher standard than us."

The Essex Olympian Football League outfit have only played one fixture in this campaign and are determined to give everything they can to cause an upset on Saturday.

"It's our first FA Vase appearance and, although we are certainly underdogs, we might have a puncher's chance," said Cordrey.

"We only train once a week but we have got some good players and we are capable of making a game of it.

"I think they will be a bit nervous and the pressure is all on them really," he added.

Town lay claim to one of the most entertaining websites in non-League football, and Cordrey thinks that team spirit is key to the side.

"We have a great team spirit but we know we are going up against strong side," he added.

"I'm just glad we are in the competition and hopefully now we can rightfully reclaim our Wikipedia webpage, which was deleted last year because we hadn't appeared in The FA Vase."
