Brimsdown Rovers of the Southern Midlands Premier League expect a tough game despite stepping down a division when they face Buckingham Athletic in The FA Vase First Qualifying Round on Sunday.
Buckingham are in Division One but have made a flying start to the season and Rovers club secretary Peter Wade said: “Buckingham are in the division below us but they’ve had a good start to the season so it won’t be an easy game.
“It should be a good match and as the higher division club, we are expected to win, but we won’t underestimate them.”
Rovers, who can boast the names of David Beckham and Micah Hyde in their list of former players, have had a mixed start to the season – three wins and four defeats – and Wade puts this down to new players not having had sufficient time to gel.
“We brought in a lot of new players of the summer and at the moment they are playing as individuals a lot more than they are playing as a team”, he said. “Given time I’m sure that will change but at the moment we’re giving silly goals away and missing easy chances up front.”
Having been knocked out of The FA Cup at the hands of Flackwell Heath last Friday, Brimsdown are keen to compensate with a victory in The Vase on Sunday. The prize money that they will receive if they win the game is a further incentive for Wade.
“The FA Vase is a big deal for us because it’s a main source of income for the club” he said. “We don’t get much money from elsewhere so it would be nice to get the £800 a victory on Sunday would bring.”
