People all over Cornwall laughed when Kevin Heaney declared he would take Truro City into the professional leagues after buying the club back in 2004.

Four seasons and four back-to-back promotions later, the smirks have stopped and the Cornish club are well on track to realise that ambition.

Now sitting fourth in the Southern League Premier Division, Truro will cross the Cornwall-Devon border on Saturday to face fierce rivals Tiverton Town in The FA Trophy First Round Qualifying.

The 114-mile journey is about as close as it gets to a derby fixture for Truro, and the clash takes on an added spice because a number of players are friends off the pitch and have played for both clubs.

"They all know each other and are mates so that gives us an extra incentive, even though it's not a proper derby," said Truro club secretary Ian Anear.

"A few lads from both sides have played for the other team so they will know plenty about each other out there.

"They had a man sent off when we beat them 2-0 in the league in August but we were worthy winners so that gives us confidence ahead of the weekend."

Managed by former Bradford, Oldham and Plymouth Argyle striker Sean McCarthy, Truro have gone four games without a win since last month's stunning 5-2 FA Cup triumph at Maidenhead United.

"We are doing well in The FA Cup but we've been drawing too much in the league recently," Anear explained. "We got knocked out at this stage of The FA Trophy last year so we're very keen to go at least one further."

And on the prospect of another promotion and league football in the future, Anear insisted: "I never thought that League football was possible but I do now.  The chairman is a millionaire and he has put his money into the club."
