Lampard's delight at winning start
Sunday, 09 August, 2009
Frank Lampard was delighted to start the season with silverware.
Frank Lampard hailed his Chelsea team-mates after beating Manchester United 4-1 on penalties to lift the Community Shield.
United beat Chelsea on penalties in the final of the Champions League in 2008 but after a 2-2 draw at the end of 90 minutes, Lampard and co. had the chance to get a slight slice of revenge at Wembley.
Lampard, who scored Chelsea's equaliser after Nani had opened the scoring, said: "Of course it does not atone for the Champions League final but it was nice.
"It is always good to win a penalty shootout especially after losing one with Chelsea and England. So it was great to get our season off to a winning start."
Ricardo Carvalho made it 2-1 for Chelsea before Wayne Rooney's 90th minute equaliser sent it to penalties.
Carvalho said: "I am very happy, we did not start very well but we controled the game after half time and we deserved to win.
"With penalties it is lucky but we deserved it."
Patrice Evra was injured when Carvalho scored Chelsea's second but under new rules for the season, the opposing team do not have to kick the ball out.
Lampard added: "There are new rules and we all knew that. Manchester United knew that and I am sure they would have done the same thing.
"I am happy to be playing in the diamond formation. I am not your typical number 10 who will do tricks - I will help out defensively but also help out in attack."
Carvalho was linked with a move away from Chelsea this summer but after helping Carlo Ancelotti's men lift the first trophy of the season, he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge.
"I am really happy now, I am ready for the new season after what was a disaster last year. I was injured and it was horrible but now I am happy and I want to stay."
