Beckham backs World Cup bid

England midfielder feels fans will play their part.

England star David Beckham believes that the fans can prove a key element in England’s bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Speaking at Wembley on Monday afternoon, the 34-year-old midfielder revealed that throughout his career abroad with clubs such as Real Madrid, his team-mates have often asked him about the unique atmosphere generated by the English supporters and that a World Cup would galvanise the nation.

"There is no bigger support than our fans and those who travel,” he said.

"There are full stadiums everywhere and every time I play with the biggest players in the world like Zidane and Ronaldo, they ask what it's like playing in England in front of those passionate fans.”

It isn’t just football that generates the passion of the English public though and Beckham believes that the interest and reaction to other major sporting events should make England an ideal location for the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022.

"You see Wimbledon and kids playing tennis in parks every year and the Rugby World Cup and kids playing rugby everywhere,” added Beckham, who won his 110th cap for the Three Lions against Ukraine in April.

"I wasn’t playing at Euro '96, but I was cheering England on and seeing the passion from the fans when Gazza was scoring goals and the team was doing well.

“Our country is renowned for getting excited about big events and no country can compete with us when it comes to that side."
