Stonewall FC warmed up for the IGLFA World Championships later this month by taking gold at the Gay Euro Games in Barcelona last week.
A 2-0 win over Cologne was enough to seal the competition and added to their 2006 Gay Games triumph in Chicago and their runners up spot at last year’s World Championships in Argentina.
And Stonewall’s reserve team completed a clean sweep of gold medals for the club at the Gay Euro Games by winning the Recreational Competition on penalties against Belgium.
Stonewall’s first team beat off opposition from Belgium, Milan, Washington (USA) and Paris on their way to the final and captain, Darren Lewis, commented: “The tournament was a great success and another well deserved victory for Stonewall.
“The standard of football was high and our squad worked hard with a great spirit to bring home gold.”
The IGLFA World Championships take place in London’s Regents Park on 24-30 August with Leyton Orient’s Matchroom Stadium confirmed as the venue for finals day.
