BFA UK awards night

Successful Asian clubs and players were recognised when the Bangladesh Football Association UK held their annual awards ceremony in London recently.

Held at the home of leading Asian TV broadcaster, Channel S, the event saw Bangladesh’s High Commissioner, Shafi U Ahmed, attend as special guest along with Dagenham & Redbridge skipper, Anwar Uddin plus representatives from the Premier League, Football Foundation and Tower Hamlets Council.

The 400 capacity audience saw Stepney recognised for their BFA UK Premier League title win in 2007 and London Tigers for their promotion and Sonali Bank Cup Final double.

The Lifetime Achievement Award saw Joynal Abdin Miah recognised for his 20 years in grassroots football having helped form the BFA UK committee in its early days and coaching Sporting Bengal in the London Intermediate League.

With The FA committed to raising the profile of Asians in Football, Joynal commented: “I am very proud to receive this award and my dream is for a young Asian player to pick up the FA Cup trophy one day in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.”

The event, which will be broadcast on Channel S (Sky - 814) later this year, also raised £5,000 for Muslim Aid’s Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal.
