Wembley double for Minstermen?

Battle for a place in the Football League takes place on Sunday.

Luton Town v York City
The Conference National Play-Off Final
3pm, Sunday 20 May 2012
Wembley Stadium

Luton Town and York City, who finished fifth and fourth respectively in the Conference Premier table, meet in Sunday’s Promotion Final at Wembley (3pm) with the prize of a place in the Football League at stake.

York dropped out of the League in 2004 and Luton finished in the same 24th place in League 2 three years ago. The two sides have already met in one high-profile fixture this season, the Minstermen edging the Hatters 2-1 on aggregate in an FA Carlsberg Trophy Semi-Final.

Gary Mills’ York won The Trophy Final last Saturday, 2-0 against Newport County AFC, and will become the fifth club to have played at Wembley on consecutive weekends. The others were Port Vale (Football League Trophy and Division 2 Play-Off in 1993), Stockport County (Football League Trophy and Division 3 Play-Off in 1992), Tranmere Rovers (Football League Trophy and Division 3 Play-Off in 1991) and Ealing Association (a Southern Amateur League club who used Wembley as their home ground in 1928).

York finished two points ahead of Luton and beat Mansfield Town in the Play-Off Semi-Finals. Paul Buckle’s Luton knocked out Wrexham. Sunday’s winners will line up with Conference Premier champions Fleetwood Town in next season’s Football League, with Hereford United and Macclesfield Town moving in the opposite direction.
