On Saturday 10 July 2004 - Sport Relief Day - over 140 referees of all levels and experience attended the FAMOA Referees Development Day at the Clarendon Suites, Birmingham to further enhance their refereeing abilities, knowledge and gain experience to take into the new season.
The day was designed to reach all levels of refereeing and included four sessions of high quality content covering the following:
· Refereeing Skills
· Confrontation
· Offside
· Learning from Experience
The content was superbly delivered by FA Regional Managers (Referees) Alan Wilkie, Janie Frampton, Roger Vaughan and Ian Blanchard who delivered the 'Learning From Experience' session on behalf of John Baker who was abroad on FA Business. Those who attended found the content appropriate to whatever level they officiate at.
The sessions had a blend of video clips, realistic situations, posed questions and audience participation and was professionally and enthusiastically delivered, the content never failed to be relevant to the art of refereeing and the application of the Laws.
As it was Sport Relief Day, I ran the "Run for a Mile" during Janie Frampton’s presentation. Not that I did not want to listen to Janie, but it was at the same time that the Run for a Mile was taking place around the country. However, no one told me when to stop!! It was only when I completed my fourth mile that I realised I had probably done enough. Anyway, it was for a great cause and we raised £120.98 in aid of Sports Relief. I would like to thank everyone who contributed.
The feedback and messages of thanks I have received has been excellent and the Development Day has provided our referees an opportunity to refresh and learn new skills, meet old friends and some new friends, talk about refereeing and football and yet learn and develop in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
There has a never been a better time to be or to become a referee. There are so many opportunities for referees to learn and develop. The FAMOA Referee Development Days are living proof of this.
