Stuart Pearce and Sir Trevor Brooking get involved with local youngsters at The FA Roadshow in Portsmouth. |
With Portsmouth having sealed their spot in The FA Cup Semi-Final only last weekend, it was quite fitting that one of the Pompey heroes from their victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford was at Fratton Park on Tuesday evening to take part in The FA Roadshow question and answer session.
England and Pompey goalkeeper David James joined a panel of The FA’s Chairman Lord David Triesman, Director Of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking and England Under-21 Head Coach Stuart Pearce to answer questions posed to them by over 200 local football fans.
Whilst James also had a Premiership game on Wednesday night to prepare for, it was something he enjoyed and was thoroughly appreciated by the audience.
James spoke on a whole host of different topics, such as the development of English youngsters, the prospect of a ‘39th game’ in the Premiership and how he appreciates the problems experienced by football supporters thanks to the ever changing fixture list and kick-off times in the top flight.
“I’ve come here the night before a game, which is something I wouldn’t always recommend to do, but I think it’s important that the fans have their right to give their opinions,” James told TheFA.com
“I think it’s important that The FA, as an organisation, go beyond just what people see on the TV screens such as the national side wearing the England shirt.
“The Roadshow goes out and finds what the fans around the country think and for me as a player, for both my country and in the Premier League, I think it’s important to get a feel for that.”
Speaking to the fans is something that the former Liverpool and Aston Villa man is more than happy to do and he admitted that the mood on this occasion was slightly different to the last time he had a similar experience at Pompey.
“I did a Pompey roadshow on the first week that I signed for Portsmouth, I think before I’d even played,” he revealed.
“That was amazing because the fans back then were enthusiastic, but at the same time reserved, because they’d just avoided relegation, courtesy of beating our Manchester City side at the time. I’m sure Stuart Pearce won’t appreciate that tonight though!
“It was a tense and reserved atmosphere then, but at the moment everyone is chuffed and I believe we’ve sold all of the tickets for Wednesday night so that’s good.”
There will be video footage of the panel facing the questions on TheFA.com soon.
