Alan joined The FA in September 1971 spending the vast majority of his career in the Disciplinary Department, heading the department since 1995.

Director of Governance Jonathan Hall said: "Alan was highly regarded within the football world for his extensive knowledge of The FA's disciplinary processes from the very top of the game to the grassroots.

"He was one of the most experienced and longest serving members of The FA staff.

"We will all miss Alan very much and our thoughts at this sad time are with his wife."

Alan was a lifelong Chester City supporter and the club will be holding a minute’s silence in his memory prior to Saturday’s friendly match against Raith Rovers at the Deva Stadium.

Chester City director Tony Allan said: "I have known Alan for many years, he was a gentleman and a good friend to football. On behalf of the club I would like to extend my sincere condolences to his family."

Jonathan Hall added: "We would like to thank the club for honouring Alan in this way."
