The award, for his services to sport, comes less than a month after he was formally nominated as FIFA Vice-President representing the four British Associations.

After working in local football, Thompson took on the twin roles of General Manager and Company Secretary of Doncaster Rovers.

He was elected to The Council of The Football Association in 1979 and to its Executive Committee in 1989. Less than a decade later he was elected its Chairman.

Ex-England striker Teddy Sheringham is also on the honours list with an MBE, while his former Manchester United team mate Ryan Giggs is awarded an OBE.

Clasford Stirling, manager of Broadwater Farm Football Club in Haringey, is given an MBE for his services to sport.
