Born in Cork, he was capped 36 times for the Republic of Ireland at left-back. He also represented his country at cricket.

He signed for West Ham United from Cork Celtic in 1952 when he was 19 and wore the London club's colours in 248 League games, mostly in the old Second Division.

He switched to Manchester United for a £29,500 fee in 1960, achieving League and Cup success alongside legends like Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.

On retiring he became a manager with Coventry City and Peterborough before becoming a scout for the England team.

The FA sends its condolences to Noel's family and friends.

As a mark of respect, Manchester United will observe a moment’s silence on Saturday, prior to the Barclays Premiership fixture against Manchester City.
