England Head Coach Sven Goran-Eriksson, Chief Executive Brian Barwick and Director of Football Development Trevor Brooking took questions on a wide variety of topics from sports editors who travelled from all over the country to air their views.

Newspapers present included the Yorkshire Evening Post, Manchester Evening News, Leicester Mercury, Liverpool Echo, Daily Post, Shropshire Star Hull Daily Mail and Bristol Evening Post.

Topics were extremely diverse from Sven's next England squad to grassroots football. Conversations also encompassed the health of Premier League football, The FA Cup and the National Football Centre.

The conference took place in Birmingham and the area was well represented by its media - alongside the West Midlands Express and Star and Birmingham Evening Mail were local TV stations BBC Midlands and ITV Central - who filmed pictures of the event for their tea-time bulletins.

After the press conference all the media present were invited to stay for lunch and individual talks with the FA's senior figures.

Brian Barwick said: "It is important that we make ourselves available for the regional press, they have a huge circulation and can target specific issues important to their readers.

"The FA is not a London-centric organisation - in addition to the good work our County FAs do, we at Soho Square aim to get out to all the regions whenever we can.

"Hopefully we will do this again soon - I think today has been extremely useful and some of the points raised have given us real food for thought."

Trevor Brooking outlined his vision for developing a regional coaching structure to improve standards at the grassroots upwards.

"When you're talking about coaching the elite and the grassroots then both have to compliment each other. We are appointing nine regional coaches to give us a local presence - something we haven't had to date," said Brooking.

Head Coach Sven Goran-Eriksson echoed Brooking's comments and added that he is still loving the duty of selecting and managing some of the finest footballing talent in the World. "I still love it," he said. "I'm very proud to be manager of England. I just have to live with the criticism sometimes."
