The nature of the criticism received by the England team after the 2-2 draw in Austria led to their decision, and Dein said he could understand both the players' position and the disappointment of the media.

"I see both sides of the problem," explained Dein who was in Poland for last night's game.

"On the one hand the players felt that the personal criticism some had endured following the game in Vienna was grossly unfair.

"On the other hand the media does not appreciate being met with a protest of this kind particularly following an important victory.

"But The FA understand the players' feelings and will not be taking action against them," he told the London Evening Standard.

"It has also been noted that Sven-Goran Eriksson was subject to harsh treatment in certain quarters.

"Just to put the record straight, his position as national team coach was never in danger and the International Committee did not meet to discuss the matter.

"Hopefully, taking four points from two difficult away games will have silenced some of the critics of the team and the national coach."
