Yeovil Town's Lee Johnson scored a hat-trick last night.
Spirit of the game
Wednesday, 25 August 2004.
Last night Huish Park saw a remarkable act of sportmanship from home side Yeovil Town in their Carling Cup match with Plymouth Argyle.
Lee Johnson scored a hat-trick to help Yeovil record an extra-time victory over Championship side Plymouth.
His first, though, was a bizarre goal which was never meant to be.
With Argyle's Graham Coughlan having just received treatment to an injury, Johnson knocked the ball back to Plymouth goalkeeper Luke McCormick.
However Johnson hadn't realised that McCormick had moved from his goal line and, though he tried, the 'keeper couldn't get back in time to save the ball.
The referee had no choice but to give the goal but in a generous moment of sporting behaviour, Yeovil immediately allowed Stevie Crawford to walk through their defence to equalise.
Speaking to TheFA.com, The FA's Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking said: "It was a very unusual situation but Yeovil should be congratulated for showing outstanding Fair Play in allowing Plymouth to equalise immediately.
"Their gesture is a fine example to players at all levels of the game."
