By Ben Seeley.
Representatives from The FA recently attended the official launch of Football United. The project will build the foundations, through training courses and local tournaments, of the development of grass-roots football amongst young people in Iraq.
“Football United” is funded by the FCO Public Diplomacy Challenge Fund, Already, four Iraqi coaches have completed The FA’s international coaching course at Lilleshall and now the plan is for dozens of Iraqis drawn from across the country to benefit from the English FA’s world-renowned experience.
David Davies, Executive Director said: “The Football Association is privileged to be part of this exciting regeneration project for Iraqi football.
“Through our International Development Programme, we have worked extensively around the world, developing coaches and referees, and training administrators to help build the football infrastructure in countries where assistance is needed.
"As the traditional home of the modern game, we are proud to maintain a role in its development and to share our expertise, and the lessons we have learnt over the years, with fellow members of the football family.
“Iraqi football at national team level is enviably strong. The performance of the Senior Team in the Asia Cup this year, coupled with the Olympic Team’s 4th place in the Athens Games, were both remarkable achievements given the difficulties in Iraq at the current time and both represent a positive sign for the future of Iraqi football.
“We are pleased to work with the British Government to help the continued development of Iraqi football through this Football United project, particularly at youth level which will be the platform for its continued success.
"We look forward to a positive and productive partnership with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Iraqi football”.
Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw commented: “Football is by far the most popular sport in Iraq. I am delighted to be able to announce the formal launch of this joint initiative.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to assist with the development of youth football in Iraq and to lay the foundation for continued and stronger ties between the British and Iraqi sporting communities.”
