Last month the Butere/Mumias District of Kenya played host to the opening ceremony of the competition run by the Khwisero Water Development Project (KWDP).

KWDP’s primary focus is protecting local water springs, digging wells and erecting water tanks for the local people and institutions. The Butere/Mumias District is one of the poorest areas of Kenya, and the tournament is helping raise awareness for socio-economic development initiatives and income generation in this area.

The FA’s involvement is maintaining the principle of “using football to build a better future”.

Local tournaments like this are a breath of fresh air for Kenyan football as a whole, which has endured troubled times recently.

FIFA's Emergency Committee had ordered Kenya's exclusion 72 hours before they were due to play a World Cup qualifier against Guinea in June, following the Kenyan Government’s closure of the Kenyan Football Federation (KFF).

The ban has now been lifted, and the Kenyan national team, the Harambee Stars, are looking forward to starting their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Kenya will have to play catch-up as the other teams in their group have played at least 2 games. Manager Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee is unfazed, “but I still expect the team to rise to the challenge and win.”
