The FA's International Development Programme (IDP) has initiated projects in all regions of the world, ranging from goalkeeping courses to marketing, sports medicine, refereeing and administration workshops, each targeted at the specific needs of the region or country involved.
The FA also holds annual international refereeing, fitness, sports medicine and coaching courses in England, attended by participants from all corners of the world.
In 2003, workshops conducted in the CONCACAF region have included themes such as Player’s Contracts, Transfers and Regulations, Senior Refereeing and an FA International Coaching Licence course (equivalent to the UEFA B Licence).
For 2004, CONCACAF are interested in a Sports Journalism workshop and a Fitness for Trainers course, expanding on the general workshop themes available via The FA’s IDP.
The ten CONMEBOL member countries recently benefited from two workshops held in 2003, covering Football Administration and Marketing and Strategy Planning for Senior Coaches. 2004 will see The FA holding workshops in the areas of Tournament Organisation in Peru, where the Copa America and FIFA U17 tournament are to be held whilst Chile and Ecuador have requested a workshop on Stadium Safety and Security, a key issue in the South American region.
The AFC have recently launched their Vision Asia programme, which The FA was asked to contribute to by writing a continental Strategic Development Plan last year.
Several technical courses for regional goalkeepers and coaches have also taken place in Kuala Lumpur in 2003. 2004 will see The FA assisting in the area of Marketing as this has been labelled a priority by the AFC.
OFC assistance will concentrate on the cascade training approach of referees and coaches in the region. The FA will help to produce a tiered coaching structure for indigenous coaches, starting with the OFC C Licence course to be held towards the end of 2003. Top coaches will then be invited onto our FA International Coaching Licence course next year, which will be followed up by an OFC B Licence.
CAF has confirmed they would like us to hold Referees workshop in Kenya in the first half of 2004 and a Marketing and Sponsorship workshop in Cameroon later in the year.
