F.A. helps Down Under
Friday, 31 May 2002.
FA Chairman, Geoff Thompson, accompanied by Head of International Relations, Jane Bateman, met this morning with the President of the Oceania Football Association, Basil Scarsella, Honorary President, Charles Dempsey, the OFC Executive Committee and representatives of all member countries, to sign a co-operation agreement on behalf of The Football Association and the OFC.
The agreement commits The F.A. to a long-term assistance programme to the OFC region through its International Development Programme, focusing on the four primary disciplines of Coaching, Refereeing, Administration and Sports Medicine.
'The International Development Programme reflects The FA's vision of 'using the power of football to build a better future', explained Geoff Thompson. 'It is important to us because it not only enables England to play a role in the development of the game of football, but it helps us to develop and strengthen international relationships with the football family. We not only welcome the opportunity to share our expertise, but to learn more ourselves about the how football is structured and administered around the world'.
OFC President, Basil Scarsella, welcomed the accord. 'As the smallest of the confederations, we particularly welcome this agreement with the English FA and the assistance they can offer us in the development of our football, particularly in the island countries. England has close ties with this region, and I am sure this accord will bring us yet closer together'.
The F.A. already has co-operation agreements with the Asian and African Football Confederations, and with CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Cdentral American and Caribbean Football).
