Chris Waddle in his heyday on England's wing.
Waddle and Co turn back clock
Wednesday, 06 June 2001.
It has been a while since Chris Waddle and Mark Chamberlain have been on the scoresheet for an England side but last night in the South African city of Durban the duo turned back the clock with a goal each for the England Ambassadors in a game to raise funds for the families of those who died at Ellis Park in April.
Organised byThe Football Association's International Relations section and the South African Football Association (SAFA), last night's game against a South African Masters XI ended in a 2-2 draw, although the scoreline was the last thing on anyone's mind last night.
With over 19,000 turning up to the ABSA Stadium to see the game, the support fund for the families of the 43 people who were crushed to death and the scores who were injured will have increased substantially.
"It was a really great occasion," said Terry Butcher, the team's coach. "It was played in a friendly but competitive atmosphere between two well-matched sides. It was great to see so many old faces playing with each other after all these years, even if the reasons for the game were very sad. I know all the players are just glad to have been able to pay their respects and help raise money for a worthy cause."
